Child Protection for voluntary work in Church, which level of course do I need?

by Pat D
(Hertfordshire)

I am going to start some voluntary work with children in my local Church. The work involves helping to run the Sunday school activities with the youth, aged about nine to eleven. I won't be on my own but will be with a group of other parent helpers.

We will mainly be doing things like drawing, making things and playing games, running around and stuff like that.

We will also do some activities during the week in the evenings for about an hour. My question is related to Safeguarding, so that I have all the up to date training.

I don't want to be in a situation where if something happened in terms of safeguarding, I wouldn't know what to do or or who to speak to.

Also, I know that we have a Child Protection Officer in the Church. I think they are supposed to look after this subject, but I am just writing to double check.

Please can you let me know which Child Protection courses I should take and which levels. Do I need to do a course somewhere or can I take a course online?

I will be grateful for any help that you can give to me.

Check with your Church or other faith group. We do levels one, two, and three
by: Andy

Thanks for your message regarding your voluntary work in Church (or any faith group.) A couple of things spring to mind after reading your note. You mentioned that your Church already has a Child Protection Officer. Have you asked them if they provide child protection training? Perhaps the best place to start is with them.

My thoughts here are valid for any faith group, not just churches, although I have based my answer on the information in your question.

It is highly likely that there is a Child Protection Policy for the church that covers aspects such as training. In a lot of cases, training will be provided, either through the Church Child Protection Officer themselves, through a group arrangement through a denomination, or through external providers such as ourselves, Graffham Consulting Ltd.

It is best practice for all those working with children in any setting, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity, to be appropriately trained, and many settings such as schools and hospitals have to have training.

If it is the case that your Church does not offer training, then do speak to us. We offer in-house and public training courses at Levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as specially-tailored courses for a range of settings and activities.

Please take a look at our courses:

Child Protection Awareness Training Course Level 1 (CPD Certified)

Child Protection Advanced Training Course Level 2 (CPD Certified)

Child Protection Training Course Level 3 | Designated Persons | CPO

ONLINE Child Protection Awareness Course (Online Level 1)

Online Child Protection Advanced Course Level 2
